How to Balance and Repair a Crooked Garage Door

in Garage Door Safety by elkgrovegaragedoorco

Have a crooked garage door? It’s definitely irritating. It’s certainly an eye sore. But worse — it’s a serious safety issue. If your garage door isn’t sitting correctly in the frame, you’ll need to have it repaired as soon as possible. You can either do it yourself — or hire a professional garage door repair company.

Fortunately, repairing a crooked garage door is actually a lot easier than it looks. But because of the weight of the door (several hundred pounds, easily), this garage door repair can be a bit dangerous. So if you’re not comfortable DIYing this garage door repair, definitely call in the professionals. We’d be happy to help. We repair garage doors and garage door openers in the Elk Grove and Greater Sacramento area.

Identify the Crooked Spot

Disconnect your garage door opener and unplug it.

First, you’ll need to identify the crooked spot. Test the garage door by moving it up and down. Find the spot it stays suspended when you let go. If this spot is more than 4 feet off the ground, your garage door is unbalanced.

Balancing the Garage Door

Prop the door open with a step ladder. This will take pressure off the garage door springs.

Adjust the garage door springs and keep the door level until it is perfectly horizontal. Make adjustments with the cables as necessary.

Is It Time for a New Garage Door Installation?

It’s the age old question: Can you get away with repairing your garage door this time or is it time to install a brand new door? Even as you ask yourself this question you probably already know the answer. It really all comes down to safety, function, and appearance. Does your door still work properly? Is it particularly noisy when it goes up and down? Does it open smoothly or do you have difficulty getting it to go all the way up? How safe is your door? Is it well balanced? Does it seem like it can come crashing down any second? What does it look like? Does it add to the appearance of your home or is it an eye sore? If your door doesn’t function smoothly, appear to be in safe working order, or look very good, maybe it’s time for a new door.
