Garage Door Opener Repair: How to Replace Your Motor

If you hear a whirring sound in your garage door opener but the door doesn’t open, there’s a good chance you’ve got a burned out motor. Fortunately, replacing this is a fairly easy DIY garage door opener repair. The motor is a gray cylinder mounted inside the frame of the unit. The gear is a white toothed wheel mounted on a metallic shaft. Either the gear or the sprocket will need to be replaced. You can buy a replacement kit at most hardware stores. You’ll need to dismantle the old motor by removing the clip that holds it in place. Be sure to also disconnect the RPM sensor. Attach the new motor by doing a reverse of the steps that removed the older motor. Reconnect the power and test it out.
